Urban Company (formerly UrbanClap) is a leading tech platform that brings premium, reliable services right to a user's doorstep. Operating across India, the UAE, Singapore, and Australia, the platform standardizes and digitizes the highly fragmented home services industry—offering everything from home cleaning and repairs to personal beauty and wellness, powered by a network of thousands of trained professionals.
This case study explores how we applied critical insights from a highly successful membership program to engineer Scheduled Bookings, cracking the code on behavioral loyalty and turning one-off utility transactions into predictable, recurring habits.

Our journey started with a challenge to drive repeat behavior across both Indian and international markets. We began with a loyalty program spanning different verticals—such as home care for repairs and wellness for beauty—designed around explicit loyalty. By leveraging the sunk cost fallacy, where consumers commit upfront to gain future value, and running various experiments to increase attach-rates, we achieved a 167% increase in attach-rates within six months. We later consolidated these individual offerings into a unified membership program that provided value across all available services.
However, value doesn’t always need to be monetary. We realized we could offer immense value through priority slot booking, a guarantee to assign their favorite professional every time, dedicated customer support, and, most importantly, making routine services completely effortless.
Yet, while the membership program was a massive win, high-CAC markets like the UAE, Singapore, and Australia introduced a different hurdle: the "Clean Slate" effect. The moment a professional left a consumer's house, the relationship reset to zero. We found ourselves re-earning the user's intent for every single booking—a losing game when acquisition costs are sky-high.
We weren't operating in the dark, though. Armed with insights from our successful membership launch and data from a previous feature I owned—which allowed consumers to request their favorite professionals—we knew exactly where the friction lay. To win in premium markets, we needed to pivot from explicit loyalty (pay-to-join) to implicit loyalty (habitual use). We engineered Scheduled Bookings as a frictionless, "set-it-and-forget-it" engine. The goal was simple: eliminate the future decision points.

The success of Scheduled Bookings was so high that it became the teacher. We took the behavioral insights from this product—specifically how consumers responded to social proofing, the upfront pitch, and simplified decision-making—and baked them back into the original membership program. By applying these learnings, we didn't just stabilize the program; we pushed the attach-rates even further.
The international pilot we launched achieved an attach-rate of around 20%, and within just a few months, we were delivering 70% of all cleaning services in the Singapore market through Scheduled Bookings. This wasn't about rigid mental models or complex academic theories. It was about realizing three core truths:
Convenience Beats Commitment: A user might hesitate to pay for an upfront membership, but they will eagerly sign up for "never having to think about booking a cleaning service again."
Users are Resourceful: If you have a beautiful UI full of animations but lack a reliable service, consumers won't waste their time. But if you provide a highly reliable service, consumers will happily tread their own path through the interface to make it work for them.
Growth is a Loop: A feature originally built for a niche international market can easily end up being the secret sauce that optimizes your entire global ecosystem.
